Ingenious Women's Initiatives for Sustainable Urban Development

The Initiatives

The Ingenious Women's Initiatives for Sustainable Urban Development is a series of activities hosted by the Australian Pavilion in conjunction with UN-Habitat and the Women's Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai (Oct 2021–Mar 2022).

Three activities – the NeOasis Design Challenge, Sustainable Urban Development Symposium and Ingenious Women's Collection – aim to promote innovation and contribute to action frameworks for the implementation of inclusive urban ingenuity. They will also initiate a global platform for women in architecture, engineering, construction, urban planning, green building, design, and allied professions.

The activities will take place in the lead-up to and during EXPO 2020 Urban & Rural Development Week  31 Oct–6 Nov 2021 and will address the theme week question 'How do we live and grow in harmony with our planet?'.

NE[O]ASIS Challenge

Idea Design Challenge for New Desert Oasis Architecture and Cities (Jul–Oct 2021)

Inclusive design teams are challenged to find creative solutions for new developments, combating desertification and contributing to self-resilience in resource-scarce regions of the world.

The Symposium for Inclusive Urban Ingenuity acts as a global catalysing platform, bringing together women (and supporters) in architecture, engineering, construction, urban planning, sustainable design and building, design, and allied professions. The symposium aims to generate a network of, and solutions for, women's empowerment stakeholders from industry, academia, government and communities.

The Collection of Ingenious Initiatives for Sustainable Urban Development spotlights the contributions made by women to the design and implementation of socially and environmentally sustainable urban and architectural development around the world. Inspiring projects will be showcased in an online gallery.

Women occupy just 10 % of the highest-ranking jobs at the world’s leading architecture firms.
